What Are Skinbased Skis?
The skinbased skis, also called sliding snowshoes, function more like skis and are ideal for deep snow. A descriptive name would also be backcountry skis.
Skinbased skis combine ski touring and snowshoeing. They are shorter and wider than traditional backcountry skis, making them easier to maneuver in deep snow. Their integrated climbing skins provide good grip uphill and help control speed downhill.
The bindings are designed to fit most hiking boots, such as trekking boots. The boots mus support your ankle.
Where is the Rental Shop?
The rental service is located in Ruka. Address: Saukkotie 20 B, Ruka
The rental shop has 10 pairs of skinbased skis available, along with poles.
How does the rental system work?
Choose your date, time, number of people, and preferred gear.
Pay via the online store.
One hour before your booking starts, you’ll receive a lock code for the rental shop.
Pick up and return the gear using self-service.
Guidance may be available on-site, depending on availability and prior agreement.
How far in advance should I book?
You can book online at least 1 hour before your rental starts.

Rental Terms & Conditions
We do not provide clothes or shoes for your adventure. You must have right & good winter outdoor clothing (suitable for conditions) and wearing winter shoes that support your ancle.
The renter is responsible for the rental gear and must return it in good condition.
If any damage occurs, the renter must immediately report it.
Pricing
Hourly rental: €30 / 6 hours (starts at 10:00, available hourly).
Full-day rental: €35 (9:00 AM - 9:00 AM).
Additional days at a discounted rate.

Which Model Should I Choose?
OAC KAR 147 (3, 4, 5, 6)
The classic model.
Best for deep snow skiing.
Has steel edges for grip, though the wide shape doesn’t grip as well as the longer and narrower GT model (7, 8) on hard snow.
OAC XCD GT 160 (7, 8)
XCD stands for Cross Country Downhill, designed for backcountry skiing with descents.
Best suited for mountainous and hilly terrain in soft snow.
Does not perform well on hard-packed snow due to lack of edge grip.
OAC WAP 127 (Pair 9)
Shortest and lightest model, without steel edges.
Ideal for slow-moving users who need agility (e.g., hunters).
Often used for forest bird hunting due to excellent maneuverability in wooded terrain.
Also great for kids and juniors.
OAC WAP 129 (10, 11)
Similar to WAP 127, but a newer model and 2 cm longer.
Altai HOK 146 (2)
Comparable to the OAC models but with a slightly more complicated binding mechanism.
Best Trails
I highly recommend Riisitunturi National Park!
You can also explore Valtavaara, Pyhävaara, and Konttainen, but be aware of steep uphills and downhills and dense forests. They can make your route more challenging.

The renter is always responsible for the rental gear and must compensate for any damage caused by negligence.
